My understanding on the purpose of television idents

Task 1

The main purpose of idents is a clever way of identifying a television show or broadcasting station all channels have their own idents and are basically a form of identification towards the viewers so without even thinking the human mind engages and identifies the subject matter.
Reasonably good examples of idents are probably terrestrial television;

These are the three idents I will be mainly focusing on.

BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation)

The BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation) uses many idents the specific one I have chosen to analyze is the composition that shows the Hippopotamus's starting at the surface (real life footage), then merging into the water as this happens the Hippopotamus look to be swimming around but you can now tell the Hippopotamus's are now animated(not real life footage), and then they start forming a circle within the water. The circular form is the known ident for the BBC and makes it easy to identify the broadcasting Organisation. after the cirle apears like all BBC idents the logo apears. I personally think that the composition is reasonably suttle, calm and a flowing pace the music that is used its quite Unusual but fits the mood very well. the duration of the ident lasts for 31 seconds.

ITV

The second ident I have chosen to present is curtsey of ITV the unique aspect of ITV’s idents are that they all have the common colour yellow within them, show everyday surroundings in a different light and they use state of the art media technology and techniques to create the idents.This particular composition starts with a man and dog entering a building while the camera is slowly moving into position of the street then the puddles in the street begin to shoot yellow coloured water out of them like fountains would. The purpose of this composition is that it shows the theme colour yellow and uses a unique strategy to present this idea. the total durartion lasts for only 13 seconds i feel that this is a better duration to the BBC's ident.

Channel Four

The last Ident I have chosen to analyze is provided by Channel Four, a popular terrestrial television channel commonly known for its controversial documentaries on real life stories. The Ident I am pacifically concentrating on would be the composition titled Tokyo,located in the down town/urban area and shows the camera slowly moving through the streets at a slow speed but gives the effect of someone’s point of view. Throughout the Ident u see misplaced builds floating around in the air until 5 seconds before the end of the Ident were you realise that the misplaced buildings form the number four in a cleaver manner. I feel the level of creativity for Channel Fours indents is very high, and did impress me for the first time. This particular Ident lasts for duration of 42 seconds I feel that this Ident could be shorter but bearing in mind the pace and tempo of the Ident the duration would always be longer.

Task 2

Still focusing on the three chosen Idents i will be continuing with a futher analyze of the three idents.

BBC 1 - Hippopotamus Ident

There are several aspects on this Ident I managed to pick up on that make this Ident work sucessfully. The first one I encountered at the end of the Ident with the positioning of the hippopotamus forming a circle and the BBC's logo appearing are directly within the middle of the screen I feel that the positioning is helpful to composition. I also picked up on the colour co-ordination they use ocean blues mixed with grey from the hippopotamus's and have hints of green and pink in some shots. The key aspect I feel is important is the positioning on the sun light in the last shot were the hippopotamus's form a circle, as it hits the water the blue is lighter and the light toward the outskirts is darker this a simple fade around the light source. I feel that the target audience would range from a younger generation to even an elderly generation I feel it has the calm feeling entertain a young children, teenagers, parents and the elderly. The composition using the hippopotamus to me has a link to the nature documentaries that the BBC plays Natural world and Life.

ITV 1 -Fountains

With the ITV 1's Ident that the target audience is uncertain would most probably been a mid aged group wouldn’t really excite many people but in its ways is very stylish and smooth and sets the mood before the programme you are awaiting starts the positioning of the ITV's logo is towards the left hand side covering at least two fountains and ends with the yellow fountains in site before they stop shooting water at the end of the Ident. The lighting is important to the composition because it sets the mood the viewer can tell it’s in mid evening because the sky is dark and I feel the composition of having the person walking his dog inside is because its evening time now so people tend to be at home after work or whatever occupies them during the day. I feel that the colours match the composition, because all the background seems to be darker shaded colours so when the yellow fountains appear the bright colour yellow stands out.

Channel 4 – Tokyo

The last Ident I focused on was provided by channel four, titled Tokyo and I feel that this Ident is very popular and liked by many people and viewers of Channel Four, throughout my research on Channel Four I found out that although being a British channel it broadcast a lot on multi-nation television affairs from across the world so I feel the main purpose of this particular Ident is to shoe the connection it has with the world the Tokyo Ident is not the only Ident located within another country Channel Four have also produced idents involving Fourth plinth in Trafalgar Square, Yellow Taxi Cabs, Typical Markey streets and A Dubai skyline with building construction. I feel that the target audience would most likely be all ages the characteristics and tempo would entertain a parent and their child. The colour contrast is very bright most of the floating buildings have neon lights attached to them which helps it to stand out a little more.
